Help Plan the 8th Grade Celebration The end of the year is coming quickly. We need 8th grade parents and others to help plan the picnic and dance for the 8th Grade Celebration. The 8th Grade Celebration committee is having a meeting on March 7th at 7:00pm in the HCMS Media Center. Please come and take part in this exciting time of your 8th grader’s school year. Make a Donation for the 8th Grade Celebration Attention 8th grade parents and others, we are planning a great 8th Grade Celebration for the end of school. The 8th Grade Celebration Committee would like to be able to provide a picnic, t-shirts and a dance for all of the 8th graders. Although the PTA has donated money for this event, we need additional funds in order to cover everything. If you are able to donate money, you can do so online or by flyer. For online payments via PayPal or credit card go to our website http://www.harperschoicepta.org/ and click on the Donate Now button. The flyer will be sent home soon, or you can download it from our website, and put the flyer and cash in an envelope. Please have your child bring the envelope to his/her homeroom teacher.
MSA Testing – Volunteers Needed We need volunteers for hall monitors during MSA testing on March 13th and 14th and March 20th and 21st from 8:30am-11:00am. Contact Anjani Chandra at acksme@verizon.net if you are able to help.
Valentine’s Day Dance On Friday February 10th, we had a very successful Valentine’s Day Dance in the HCMS Cougar Café. The children had a great time. We would like to thank Maurita Bowie for organizing and pulling this event together and all the parent volunteers who came to decorate and chaperone. The PTA would also like to give a special thanks to those teachers who volunteered their Friday afternoon to chaperone. We are so fortunate to have a community where staff and parents can work together for our children.
Teacher Conference Dinner Last Wednesday February 15th, the PTA sponsored a Taco Dinner for the teachers. Thank you to Leslie Sands the Hospitality chairperson and all the parents who donated their time and food for this event. Everything looked so yummy! The teachers greatly appreciated the dinner.

Dear Harper’s Choice Families,
Here at Harper’s Choice, we are extremely excited to be a part of the new “Passages Program.” The Passages Program is a joint collaboration between the Howard County School System and the Howard County Police Department. In the program, a Student Resource Officer (SRO) is assigned to assist middle school students in navigating the challenging middle school years. Officer Littlefield has been assigned to Harper’s Choice and Wilde Lake Middle Schools and will work as part of the faculty. She comes to us with a wealth of relationship building experience as well as teaching experience. She will mentor, co-teach, and support daytime and after school programs at Harper’s Choice.
We invite you to join us for “Coffee and Conversation” with the Principal on Tuesday, February 21, at 6:15 p.m. that will be hosted by the PTA. We will discuss in detail our new SRO program.
Please make sure that you give Officer Littlefield a great big Harper’s Choice welcome, the next time you are in the building!

6th Grade News The 6th grade team would like to invite the 6th grade parents to an awards ceremony on Thursday, February 16th at 8:15am in the Cougar Cafe to recognize the accomplishments of the 6th grade students during the second quarter. Students will be recognized for receiving all A's and all A's and B's. In addition, we will recognize our students of the month for the second quarter and a few students who have shown respect, responsibility and built positive relationships. Valentines Day Dance The second annual Valentine’s Day Dance will be held on Friday, February 10, from 3-4:15pm in the Cougar Café. Please note that children allowed to walk home must still have a signed permission slip designating them as a walker. For car riders, parents please come inside the Cougar Café to pick your children up. Parent volunteers are still needed. Contact Maurita Bowie at mauritabowie3@gmail.com.
HCMS Book Fair Volunteers Needed The HCMS Media Center is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair in February. The Fair will be open during parent/teacher conferences and will be staffed by the Media Center Specialist. However, volunteers are needed to help cover some of the shifts February 21-24 and February 27. The shifts are either 8:15am-12:00pm or 11:30am-3:00pm. Please contact Shari Spearman in the media center (410-313-6935) if you can help with any shifts at the Scholastic Book Fair.
PTA Volunteers Needed The Harper’s Choice PTA encourages everyone to be a part of the school community. We are currently looking for a Nominations Chairperson and a Cultural Arts Chairperson. The responsibilities for these positions are described below:
Nominations – This Chairperson heads the nomination committee that recruits candidates for the HCMS PTA executive board for the coming school year. Cultural Arts - This Chairperson works with the school GT Resource Teacher and Administration to select two Cultural Arts events for HCMS in the coming school year. In addition to coordinating the logistics for the selected Cultural Arts events, this Chair also coordinates the Maryland Shakespeare in Residence program.

It is our goal that every parent and student will leave this event feeling confident that every student can reach their fullest potential!

Lowe’s Grant – Come and see the outdoor classroom! Last Saturday, 1/21, a small group of parents came and finished the outdoor classroom. We’d like to give a big thank you to Kim Swanson for all the work she did to make this happen. Thank you also to Neil Ryder, Leslie Ryder, Bruce Talbott, WLHS Senior - Sam Talbott, and Bill Johnson, for taking the time on a stormy day to assemble the new tables. Student Directories On 1/2/12 the Student Directories were handed out to students. This year we used a new system to store the membership and directory information which unknowingly made it difficult to access the directory data. The PTA would like to thank Anjani Chandra for all the time and effort she put into this Project. Great Job!

“Merry Mulch” Your Holiday Tree, January 3-20 Howard County residents with curbside yard trim collection can set Christmas trees out on their regular curbside recycling days through January 20. Trees will not be accepted on trash collections days. Trees must be cut into less than four foot lengths and tied; they do not need to be bagged. Have your tree out the night before your collection day.
Weatherization Assistance Program Weatherization services are available for low and moderate income households through the Community Action Council of Howard County. Applications can be submitted at either the Columbia office at Gateway Drive or the North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center. For questions, please contact Kathy True at 410-313-1181. |

Our annual Bingo Night is January 13th!! Gather all of your new extra gifts, toys and other items that can be used as prizes. In the past we’ve had a mixture of home and garden items, toys, electronics and anything else you want to donate. Bring them to the office and put them in the PTA room in the box labeled Bingo Night prizes. Gift certificates are also welcomed, as we often hold raffles during the event. Support your Child’s Middle School Experience Did you make a new years resolution to be more involved in your child’s middle school experience. Come and support the PTA. There are many ways to do this. You can:
- Come to our meetings. We have 90-minute organized, fun, and informative meetings at the school once a month. Everyone is welcome to sit in, listen and let their ideas be heard! Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 10th at 7:00 in the Media Center.
- Join the HCMS PTA by the Membership, Directory and Volunteer form or on-line. to see more information.
- Volunteer to help or chair an event! We will take any time or talent you have to give, before, during and after school.
- Sign up for a Safeway Card and designate HCMS as your selected school! (#6512672). See the fundraising page on our website for more details.

- Send in your empty ink and toner cartridges from home and your office! We receive $2 for every ink or toner cartridge we recycle. Don't throw them in the trash. Cell phones and batteries are recycled to keep them out of the landfills, reducing our carbon footprint.

Donate Prizes for Bingo today Our annual Bingo Night is January 13th!! Gather all of your new extra gifts, toys and other items that can be used as prizes. In the past we’ve had a mixture of home and garden items, toys, electronics and anything else you want to donate. Bring them to the office and put them in the PTA room in the box labeled Bingo Night prizes. Gift certificates are also welcomed, as we often hold raffles during the event. Give the Gift of Appreciation – Nominate a Staff Member for the Above and Beyond Award Above and Beyond is a new PTA award that recognizes staff members who go above and beyond their responsibilities to encourage students to reach their potential. The recipient can be nominated by parents, students and staff and is given monthly. The winners are announced on HCTV and also on the school’s bulletin board in the foyer. . “Above and Beyond” nomination forms, along with a box to collect them, are available on the table between the two doors in the front office of HCMS, or on the PTA Website.

Weatherization Assistance Program Weatherization Assistance Services are available for low and moderate income households through the Community Action Council of Howard County Applications can be submitted at either the Columbia office at Gateway Drive or the North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center. Landfill, Trash and Recycling pickup Holiday Schedule The Alpha Ridge Landfill will close at 2pm on Saturday, December 24, 2011 and will reopen Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 8am. There will be no curbside collection on Monday, December 26, 2011 in observance of Christmas Day. ALL trash, recycling and yard trim collections will slide and be made one day later that week.

Board of Social Services needs members willing to serve a three year term. The Board provides advice on state policies, procedures and programs that apply to Howard County and evaluates the local director of the Department of Social Services. Animal Matters
Hearing Board seeks members for five year terms. The Board is responsible for hearing appeals, making recommendations for the operation of the animal control facility, and reviewing its budget annually. Commission on Aging seeks committed members to serve five year terms. The Commission works with the Office on Aging to plan activities, researches legislation and provides testimony when appropriate. Current HCMS Events
HCMS PTA Family Walk through the Symphony of Lights The HCMS PTA is coordinating a Walk through the Symphony of Lights on Dec. 14th from 5:00-5:30. This is a family event in which all participants must be chaperoned by a parent or an authorized adult. Cost will be $5.00 and a canned good. More information will be coming soon. Juanita Robinson Fund Awarded to Harpers Choice Middle School for Environmental Education Trip We are excited to announce that the Harpers Choice Community Association has awarded us a Juanita Robinson Grant of $500 for our 6th Grade Environmental Education Scholarship fund. This grant allowed us to help more students attend the 6th Grade environmental Education program from 11/14 to 11/17.
Coat Drive for HCMS Community The PTA is sponsoring a Coat Drive for people in our community through Dec. 15th. Please place clean and ready to wear coats or jackets, of all sizes in the labeled box located in the lobby. Conferences are a great time to drop off your coats!!
Ink Cartridges/Toner and Cell Phone Recycle – New box in Lobby! Please send in those empty ink and toner cartridges that are cluttering your computer area! We receive $2 for each one we receive and that is paying for all of our paper and supply expenses this year. All sizes and brands are accepted. If you have a large toner cartridge to return, please have your student drop if off at the front office and NOT try to fit it into the small opening in the ink recycling box in the lobby. Contact Rebecca Dietz with any questions.
